HUNNIC TRIBES, Hephthalites. Drachm (Silver, 26 mm, 3.34 g, 3 h), 'The Hephthalite Prince' type, circa 474-561. Within a beaded circle, Sasanian-style crowned bust to right; a ribbon on each shoulder; a cross-like symbol before head. Rev. Half-length bareheaded bust of Hephthalite chieftain or prince standing facing, head to left, wearing a tunic and holding a drinking cup in his right hand; his left hand on his hip; deteriorated legend before and behind head which might be ηβο–δαλο (‘Hephthalite’ in Bactrian). Vondrovec 287A. Zeno-318759. Extremely rare, an attractive example of this very unusual issue. Areas of weakness and with minor deposits on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.
